A Counsellor’s Journey of Compassion, Culture, and Change
My journey into the counselling profession was shaped by personal experiences of loss, bereavement, and grief. Which deepened my understanding of mental health and emotional wellbeing through the lens of culture and belief. I came to recognise how cultural norms can silence emotional expression and how stigma particularly for women often prevents people from seeking support. These experiences highlighted the critical role of cultural awareness in mental health care. I believe that healing is possible when culture, belief and emotional wellbeing are approached together with respect, empathy and understanding. my commitment as a counsellor is to create a safe space where individuals regardless of background can navigate grief, express themselves freely and access the support they need.
In many cultures, experiences such as death, illness, or loss are interpreted as punishments, yet my own journey through grief taught me different perspective. Through loss, I discovered hidden strengths, resilience, untapped potential, finding purpose in pain and meaning in adversity. During those difficult times what I needed most was someone who could truly listen, without judgement, without assumptions. While mainstream services provided support I often found lack of cultural awareness and sensitivity that fully understood the context I came from. This gap inspired my commitment to create a safe, culturally competent space where individual can be heard, supported and empowered through their own experiences of grief and adversity.
As my curiosity about human behaviour grew, so did my desire to support others navigating silent struggles. I was deeply moved by the injustice and lack of empathy many endured behind closed doors. I recognised that holding space for others requires more than compassion, it demands knowledge training and ethical practice. Challenging cultural expectation I returned to education later in life, embracing the belief that learning has no age limit. This transformative path strengthened my commitment to create a safe space.
Over the past decade I have completed formal education and earned degrees in Counselling, qualifications in leadership and completed additional training to ensure my practice is professional, ethical, and effective. Today I have created the very space I once needed, AL-FALAQ Counselling, a safe, culturally sensitive and non-judgemental environment for those navigating grief, trauma, and life’s transitions. My mission is simple yet deeply personal, to provide space for healing and growth, where no one has to carry their pain alone. I strive to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health, break down cultural and systemic barriers, and make support accessible to those who need it most. At Al Falaq culture and mental health are embraced together grounded with respect, compassion and understanding.
